The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee has endorsed Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike as the leader of the Rivers State chapter of the party.
The PDP NWC which took the decision of the congress of the party in the state also postponed the National Executive Committee meeting, earlier scheduled for September 26, to October 24, which could have overturned the decision.
The acting National Chairman of the party Umar Damagum, revealed this decision during a meeting at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja on Thursday.
The NWC meeting was to hold three weeks ago, but the rising tension within the party, especially between Wike and the PDP Governors Forum led to the Rivers State party congresses.
The feud between Wike and current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, increased on August 24 when PDP governors publicly backed Fubara, just as the PDP said the Rivers State Congresses should be reviewed.
The governors’ affirmation of Fubara as the leader of the PDP in the state angered Wike, who on August 31 vowed to create chaos in the governors’ states if they did not refrain from interfering in Rivers State matters.
On September 3, the PDP Governors’ Forum responded to Wike’s threat, and condemned it saying he was irresponsible.
The NEC meeting, earlier scheduled for August was to discuss Damagum’s removal, but was first shifted to September 26 because some members were travelling to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage. It has now been rescheduled to October 24
