Two people have died and many were injured in Chad on Tuesday when protesters took to the streets demanding a return to civilian rule.
According to reports, a woman died when the protesters attacked a bus in N’Djamena, while a man was killed during demonstrations in the south of the country.
Chad’s military seized power shortly after the death of President Idriss Deby Itno last week Monday, and installed his son, Mahamat Idriss Deby, a four-star general, as the country’s leader.
Deby died from gunshot wounds during a battle with rebels, after winning the country’s presidential election.
Opposition politicians however rejected the choice of Deby’s son as the country’s new leader, describing it a “coup”.
Tuesday’s anti-military rule protest has highlighted the tense atmosphere in Chad following Deby’s death, with the country’s new leadership striving to win the heart of the population that seems exhausted by Deby’s 30-year rule.
Chad’s Military Council had on Monday named Albert Pahimi Padacke, the runner-up to Deby in the country’s presidential election, as Prime Minister of a transitional government.
A spokesman for the council said security forces were attempting to contain the protesters while limiting material damage.
