The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a nationwide 7-day warning strike from today (Monday), to protest the prolonged abduction of one of their colleagues, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.
The strike, which began at 12am, was declared by NARD’s National Executive Council (NEC) following an emergency meeting held to address the situation.
President of NARD, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, said the strike is a direct response to the kidnapping of Dr. Popoola, who has been held captive for eight months.
Abdullahi said the strike would be total, with no concessions made for emergency care during the period.
Dr Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew during a raid on the hospital’s staff quarters by armed bandits.
The husband was eventually released while Dr Popoola, a nursing mother, and her nephew, remain in the kidnappers’ custody.
