Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has blamed the country’s past leaders for the state of power generation in the country, describing the 5,000MW generation for the 200 million population as shameful.
The minister, according to a statement by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji stated this when he received members of the Civil-Military Committee on Energy Security, in his office.
He decried the spare of power infrastructure vandalism across the country, saying the acts deprive the government of the capacity to provide stable and affordable electricity to homes, industries, and all critical sectors of the economy.
Adelabu said the past leaders in the power sector failed to do the right thing in the past 60 years.
“Let me tell you that some of the transformers we are still using today are 64 years old. How do you want such to give you what you desire at this age?
“Those maintaining them do not even understand them again. This is a reflection of the actions and inactions of the past 60 years. We have not done what is right in this sector in the past 60 years and that is what we are correcting now,” he added.
The minister said the desire of the President Bola Tinubu administration is to eradicate energy poverty among Nigerians, with a focus on engendering a new energy development for Nigeria that will make electricity available to all Nigerians, where they reside.
