The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it is probing a case of destruction of the country’s passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
Over the weekend, a viral video of a woman destroying her husband’s passport led to calls on the NIS to investigate and mete out sanctions in line with the law.
The woman, now identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, with passport number A11990869, according to a statement by NIS Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, will be probed to unravel the circumstances leading to the destruction of the passport.
The NIS noted the gravity of the situation, saying that if the allegations are verified, the actions of Mrs. Igiebor could constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended).
This law section prohibits the wilful destruction of Nigerian travel documents, with penalties for such offences detailed under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Udo reiterated the commitment of the NIS to enforcing the Immigration Act rigorously to maintain national security and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic instruments.
The service reassured the public that the investigation will be thorough, and appropriate legal measures will be taken based on the findings.
