Six students have drowned in Mbang River, in Ribang (Mbang) village, Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, while returning from a Junior WAEC exam.
the incident occurred at about 5:30 pm on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Manasseh Monday (16 yrs), Musa John (16 yrs), Pius David (15 yrs), Monday Ayuba (16 yrs), David Danlami (19 yrs), and Yahuza Audu (16 yrs) who are students of Government Secondary School Fadan Chawai.
The students had taken their West African Junior School Examination and were returning home at about 5:30 pm when they entered the river and got drowned.
The spokesperson of Ribang Development Association, Pastor Simon Ishaku, said on Wednesday that three dead bodies had already been recovered and buried while the other three were missing as locals had not been able to recover them from the river.
He said their people have been drowning in the river over the years, adding that for members of the community to access any school or hospital facility, they have to travel for about 8 kilometres.
“We’re calling on the Federal Government, Governor Uba Sani, Senator Sunday Katung and our House of Representative members to urgently assist us with school, hospital, access road and bridge in order to bring succor to our community,” Simon appealed.
The Kaduna State Police spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan, has not responded to calls and text messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
The Zonal Coordinator, of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency Zone One, Mubarak Muhammad, said he would confirm the incident and get back to our correspondent, which he has not as of the time of publication.
