The death toll in the Lagos cholera outbreak has risen to 26, with 579 cases since the outbreak began two weeks ago.
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who made this known at a briefing on Monday, explained that the death rate was due to patients being presented late at the hospital or brought in dead.
He, however, said no case had been reported in schools.
“For the past two weeks, we have recorded 29 deaths and 579 suspected cholera cases. The 29 deaths were caused by patients being presented late that we couldn’t resuscitate them.”
Abayomi had earlier alerted of excess report of severe gastroenteritis cases in the state, with communities around Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Area of the state being worse hit.
On Sunday, chairman of the Forum of Health Commissioners of Nigeria, Dr Oyebanji Filani, said 22 states had received test kits and other materials from the federal government following the recent cholera outbreak in some parts of the country.
