Over 90 percent of pupils in exit classes in public schools in Niger State can neither read nor write, the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), has said.
NSUBEB Chairman Dr Isah Adamu who disclosed this on Thursday during a two-day roundtable on the challenges and performance of basic education in the state.
Adamu said the event was organised following the poor performance of 250 public primary schools for the Suleja Academy, a Federal Government Unity school, and other subsequent examinations in the state.
He said there was no standard unified examination for primary six exit pupils, but what schools do was for them individually to sent names of their pupils for placement into Junior Secondary School (JSS 1) classes.
Adamu said the board has collaborated with the National Examination Council (NECO) to come up with Unified Common Entrance Examination of National Standard.
