Seventy–six corpses have been recovered so far from the boat mishap that occurred on Malale River along Tshohuwar Labata village in Ngaski local government of Kebbi State.
The Area Manager of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in the state, Birma Yusuf, disclosed this on Friday.
Over 156 passengers had been declared missing after the boat with 180 passengers on board capsized on Wednesday.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the boat, conveying the passengers who are mostly traders, was heading to Wara in Ngaski local government from Malale in Borgu local government area of Niger State.
Yusuf said the search operation was still ongoing as more corpses were expected to be recovered, adding that corpses recovered had floated to the shore of River Niger close to where the accident occurred.
He said the authority has the expertise for rescue operations but lacked equipment for rescue missions.
He, therefore, appealed to the state government to assist the authority with water boats in order to improve its operation capacity.
