About 300,000 children have been malnourished in Sokoto state, the 2023 report of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has revealed.
This was contained in a report tagged “2023 Sokoto, Katsina and Zamfara SMART Survey and Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Acute Malnutrition (AMN) Analysis released by the agency.
The Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF in Sokoto field office, Abraham Mahama, who presented the report attributed the development to poor feeding practices, insecurity and poor funding.
Mahama said many farmers were displaced because of banditry which grossly affected food production in the state.
The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in charge of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Muhammad Bello noted that, the present administration in the state was committed to reverse the ugly trend.
He commended UNICEF for their continuous support to the state.
Maryam Sa’ad, the Chief Field Officer of UNICEF urged stakeholders in the state to make use of the data to plan their future nutritional programme.
UNICEF also handed over Laptops and Accessories to Improve Data Management to the state and local government nutritional officers.
