Boko Haram commanders and other prisoners numbering 285 have escaped from the Maiduguri correctional centre on Tuesday.
The inmates reportedly escaped under the cover of the severe flooding in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday.
Prison authorities have described the escape as very highly dangerous, saying the escapees may be armed.
They expressed fear that the development could escalate insecurity in the state, occasioned by the activities of terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.
It was, however, gathered that a manhunt is underway to locate and recapture the escaped inmates, with law enforcement agencies mobilising additional resources.
