Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the next president of the country can come from any region.
Atiku stated this in a brief remark at the 94th National Executive Committee, (NEC), meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Thursday.
He spoke amid the ongoing debate of where the party’s presidential candidate should come from.
Both the Northern and Southern parts of the country have been agitating for the party to zone the ticket to their respective regions.
The zoning committee headed by the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had already zoned the party’s chairmanship ticket to the North.
The committee explained that the issue of where among the regions the presidential ticket should be zoned, was not within its purview, adding that only the NEC has the power to do so.
However, the former vice president said the regional debate on where the party’s flag bearer should come from was needless, adding that what is important is a competent leader that would address the challenges bedeviling the country.
“PDP has the right to determine how the party should be run and Nigerians have the right to determine how the country should be governed.
“The problem of Nigerians has never been where the President comes from,” he said.
