President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the decision of who succeeds him lies solely in the hands of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting to questions during an interview conducted by Arise TV, the president said he has no power to anoint his successor.
“About succession, what this admin can do is to make sure APC lasts beyond this administration.
“Succession plan depends on the party. The party will sit and make its decision by the constituencies they won.
“So those who want to be president, better join APC,” he said.
The president hinted that APC would soon conduct its convention.
He said the Mala Buni caretaker committee would present its report to this effect by the end of June.
Our correspondent reports that the committee’s extended tenure ends on June 30.
“I told the acting chairman and a committee to give me the report by the end of the month on the convention they are going to conduct and then arrange general elections until 2023,” he noted.
On the zoning, Buhari said the party would also decide the structure.
“We have started registration from ward to local government and to the state level. That way, the APC can know the number of members they have state by state and local government by local government, so that by the time this administration goes, the legacy can continue.
“And we started this from the bottom to the top, so that members of the party will be sure they are involved in decision making.
“Nobody is just going to sit in Lagos and tell them what to do. This is what we are arranging,” the president said.
