The 2023 general elections would hold from February 18.
Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stated this on Wednesday during a public hearing on the Electoral Offences Commission (Establishment) Bill, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Kyari.
Yakubu, also said the timetable of the whole elections will be released in November 2021, but however, said the electoral legal framework has to be ascertained before the timetable would be released so that INEC can govern the conduct of the 2023 general election.
He, therefore, asked to the National Assembly to hasten the amendment of electoral act bill currently before it.
“We are confident that the National Assembly will conclude work on the legal framework in earnest,” he said, adding that “the commission is anxious to know the legal framework to govern the conduct of the 2023 general elections.
He said according to the principle set by the commission, the 2023 general elections is exactly one year, nine months, two weeks and six days away from today (Wednesday April 27, 2021).
Professor Yakubu said it is the commission’s intention to release the timetable for the general elections immediately after the November 6 Anambra governorship election.
“In order to do so, there should be clarity and certainty about the electoral legal framework to govern the 2023 general election,” he said.
“We are confident that the National Assembly will do the needful and to do so in earnest.”
