Commuters passing through Kaduna-Zaria highway to other northern states now have relief as the trailers and heavy open body trucks that regularly cause gridlock at Mararaban Jos, have been moved to a park built by Kaduna state government.
Illegal parking of heavy duty vehicles for the past 20 years at Mararaban Jos had caused several accidents resulting in the death of many travelers. Mararaban Jos is like the infamous Tafa, along Abuja- Kaduna highway – where loaded tankers and trucks take over the highway, causing accidents and infernos at times.
When 21st Century Chronicle visited Mararaban Jos on Thursday the road which is hitherto jam packed by trailers and trucks is now free, as commuters ply without obstruction. While several heavy duty vehicles were already parked at the new park.
The chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, Mararaban Jos branch, Yunusa Lawal, said it was not easy to relocate to the new park having spent 20 years in their former location.
“But being law abiding citizens, we have to obey since it is for our own safety to move away from the highway,” he said.
The Secretary of Heavy Open Body Trucks, Yusuf Mohammed Anka, said the state government had done well to take them off the highway.
“It will no doubt reduce the rate of accidents on the highway,” he said.
