Jaylen Smith, an 18-year-old, who won the election in a runoff, is now the youngest Black mayor in the country.
Smith, who recently completed high school, won the election with 218 votes to Nemi Matthews Sr139, .’s making him the youngest Black mayor in the US, according to the American media.
Smith declared his triumph on Facebook and said, “It’s official, Earle, Arkansas, residents!
I’ve recently been elected as the mayor of Earle, Arkansas.
It’s time to transform Earle, Arkansas, into a better chapter.
I want to express my gratitude to all of my supporters for helping to increase voter turnout.
I sincerely appreciate all of you.”
With fewer than 2,000 residents, Earle, Arkansas, is located about 30 miles northwest of Memphis. In an interview with FOX13 revealed his goals for his town, saying, “First, I want to improve public safety here. Secondly, tear down abandoned houses… transportation here for the community, bring a grocery store here.”
