Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted a speech by Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans on Monday during a commemoration event marking the Netherlands’ Liberation Day, Dutch media reported.
Brekelmans was addressing the crowd in the city of Wageningen, in the central Netherlands, when protesters shouted at him down, chanting “Free Palestine!”, according to public broadcaster NOS. Some activists reportedly climbed over barriers into the central square where the event was taking place.
Local police said five activists were arrested.
Another protest was held in Wageningen in opposition to the visit of Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Speaker of the House of Representatives Martin Bosma, NOS also reported.
Protesters brought Palestinian flags and other materials to the demonstration.
The Netherlands celebrates Liberation Day annually on May 5 to commemorate the end of Nazi occupation in 1945.
