In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, over 1,000 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya movement have defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) party in Kano State.
The defectors, under the banner of Kwankwasiyya One Blood, announced their defection during a colourful ceremony held on Sunday at the Fine Time Events Centre in Kano metropolis. The event was attended by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, who formally received the new members into the APC fold.
The group’s leader, Aminu Murtala Minjibir, said the decision to abandon the NNPP was driven by what he described as the party’s failure to meet the expectations of Kano citizens. He also praised Senator Barau and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he called their “visible interventions and developmental efforts” across the state.
“We are more than 1,000 members gathered here today, with representation across all 44 local government areas of Kano State. We have worked tirelessly for the success of the Kwankwasiyya movement, but sadly, the NNPP has failed to deliver. We are now proud to identify as ‘Barau Maliya One Blood’ under the APC,” he said.
The ceremony took a symbolic turn when the defectors publicly removed and discarded their signature red caps the emblem of the Kwankwasiyya movement signaling their final break away from the NNPP.
Addressing the crowd, Senator Barau described their decision as a wise and patriotic move, asserting that the NNPP’s influence is dwindling even within Kano metropolis.
“You have made the right choice by joining the APC, which remains the largest and most progressive party in Africa. Why cage yourselves in a mushroom party like the NNPP when the APC offers the platform for real development and empowerment?”, he asked.
The Senate Deputy President lauded President Tinubu’s support for Kano and the North, noting that “the President has never turned down any of our requests aimed at improving the lives of our people,” he affirmed.
