Ten local government areas in Niger State have been unable to pay the September salaries, a member representing Bida II in the Niger Assembly, Mohammed Haruna, has said.
Haruna said this while raising a matter of urgent public importance.
He said some local governments paid less than 35 percent salaries, others were unable to pay any salary at all.
Haruna attributed the reason to the partial autonomy being operated by the Niger State Government.
In July 2021, according to Haruna, only 13 local government areas were able to pay 100 percent salaries while in August, 15 local government areas met up with 100 percent payment of staff salaries.
He said the non-payment of salaries has led to protests and a nonchalant work attitude by the local government workers.
“The other day, the workers of Paikoro local government area down their tools protesting over the non-payment of salaries, and Bida workers followed next blocking all the main roads leading into and outside the local government area,” he said.
”This is affecting the work as healthcare services have been halted and teachers no longer go to work because they have not been paid.”
