A fatal road crash along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Plateau State claimed ten lives in the early hours of Tuesday, around 12:12am.
The accident involved four vehicles – two trailers and two Ford Galaxy minibuses.
Eyewitnesses said 10 persons died on the spot, while several others sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, said in a statement that the sector carried out another rescue operation after a road traffic crash that occurred after the Military Check Point along Jos–Bauchi Road on the outskirts of Jos, the Plateau State Capital.
“Nineteen people were involved – seventeen males and two females. Ten adult men died on the spot, while the injured victims were taken to General Hospital, Miango, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Jos, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
“Eight corpses of the deceased were deposited at the Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgues, while two of the corpses were claimed by officials of the NURTW for interment.
“The rescue was jointly conducted by FRSC, the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Military officers and villagers.
“While further investigation is still ongoing, preliminary investigation revealed speed and reckless driving which led to loss of control were major contributory factors that led to the crash.”
Tuesday’s accident was the second in the state within two weeks as eight students of the University of Jos died in a road accident opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
